Water Basics

Join your young swimmer for some fun, games, and basic swimming lessons. Teachers will walk parents through a progression of activities to assist the children in becoming comfortable with the water and surroundings. Our goal is to give the children an opportunity to grow, love and be comfortable in the water! For children ages 6 months to 3 years. Instructors: Linda Dusold and Melissa Brunk.

Quick Lessons

Lessons will be held for 5 consecutive days.

SESSION 1: JUNE 12 – 16
SESSION 2: JUNE 19 – 23
SESSION 3: JUNE 26 – 30
SESSION 4: JULY 10 – 14
SESSION 5: JULY 17 – 21
SESSION 6: JULY 24 – 28

*All registrations must be completed the Friday before the first lesson. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Preschool Classes (Ages 3 – 5)

Child must be 3 by the start of the class or approved by aquatics director. Maximum enrollment is 6. The preschool program provides children with their first pool experience without parental assistance in a safe, fun and positive learning environment. Parents are asked to sit in observation area or in the lobby when observing class. No recreational swim is allowed during group lesson times.

*The Ray/Starfish level will not be offered during the spring session and will be replaced with a second Pike level due to demand*

School-Age Classes (Ages 6 – 12)

Lessons are 45 minutes in length. Child must be 6 before the start of the class or have approval of the aquatics director. Maximum enrollment is 6. Parents are asked to sit in observation area or in the lobby when observing class. No recreational swim is allowed during group lesson times.

CLASS LEVELS

NOT SURE WHAT CLASS YOUR CHILD SHOULD BE IN?

This class is a great way to introduce new little swimmers to the pool and help them to develop safe water habits in a fun and encouraging environment.

Pre-requisite: NONE.

Skills Spotlight: Basic paddle stroke, kicking skills, blowing bubbles with their face in the water, floating, pool safety, and proper use of personal flotation devices (PFD), and instructional flotation devices (IFD).

The Eel class is for little swimmers who are well adjusted to the water and are eager to learn more. Eel swimmers continue to build on Pike skills such as kicking and the basic paddle stroke.

Pre-requisite: Completed PIKE skills or evaluation by aquatics director.

Skills Spotlight: Kicking, floating on front and back, and progressive paddle stroke.

At these levels, swimmers are ready to begin developing endurance as well as improving stroke skills. They are also introduced to rhythmic breathing and learning about personal water safety.

Pre-requisite: Completed EEL skills or evaluation by aquatics director.

Skills Spotlight: Stroke development, treading water, building endurance, rhythmic breathing, and introduction to personal water safety skills.

Starfish is a special advanced class designed for swimmers who pass RAY level but are still in preschool. Children in Starfish level review previous skills, personal safety, rescue skills, and work on refining their strokes. They also learn underwater swimming skills.

Pre-requisite: Completed RAY skills or evaluation by aquatics director.

Skills Spotlight: Stroke refinement and underwater swimming.

Polliwog is the beginner level for school age children to help them become acquainted with the pool and adjust to the water. Polliwog swimmers learn front and back floating skills, the paddle stroke, personal safety, and the use of floating devices.

Pre-requisite: NONE.

Skills spotlight: Water adjustment, personal safety, floating, and the paddle stroke.

Guppy swimmers continue to build confidence in their ability by practicing paddle stroke skills, floating, and rotary breathing without the aid of floating devices.

Pre-requisite: Completed POLLIWOG or evaluation by aquatics director.

kills spotlight: Lead-up strokes to the front crawl, backstroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, breaststroke, survival, floating, and treading water.

At the minnow level, children continue to refine their lead-up stroke skills and begin to sequence these movements with more consistency.

Pre-requisite: Completed GUPPY Skills or evaluation by aquatics director.

Skills Spotlight: Endurance development, sequencing lead-up stroke movements, basic rescue & safety skills.

Children begin to see the results of their previous work and perform the front crawl, backstroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke and breaststroke. The butterfly stroke is also introduced.

Pre-requisite: Completed Minnow or evaluation by aquatics director.

Skills Spotlight: Perform the front crawl, backstroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, and breaststroke. Introduction to butterfly.

These are advanced levels where students focus on stroke enhancements and endurance. Swimmers will also learn turns, rescue skills and personal safety.

Pre-requisite: Completed FISH or evaluation by aquatics director.

Skills Spotlight: Stroke perfection, open/flip turns.

PRIVATE/SEMI-PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS

One-on-one instruction, or semi private, which is two or three individuals at a prearranged time. Please contact Member Services at 712-336-9622 to register and provide information on preferred times and instructor (if you have one in mind) and the aquatics director will get you in contact with an instructor to arrange the days and times.
